Douglas Yeo: DVD Format Information

My DVD, Approaching the Serpent: An Historical and Pedagogical Overview is made in two different DVD formats: NTSC and PAL. For those who might be uncertain which format to order, here is some basic information to help you make your decision.

There are two major DVD formats worldwide, NTSC and PAL. A third format, SECAM, is used in a few countries but most DVD players in SECAM countries are compatible with PAL DVDs.

  • NTSC is used in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Central America, parts of South America and some other countries.

  • PAL is used in Great Britain, most countries in Europe and Africa, Australia, the Middle East, China, India and some other countries.

  • SECAM is used in France, Russia, and some countries in Africa and Asia.

The map below is a simple guide to which format DVD is used in every country of the world. This map is a public domain image courtesy of Wikipedia.

When placing an order for my DVD, be sure to order the format - NTSC or PAL - for your country/DVD player. Please note that my DVD is encoded to be played in ALL REGIONS, meaning an NTSC DVD will play in any country that utilizes NTSC format and a PAL DVD will play in any country that utilizes PAL format.
