BOOK - THE ONE HUNDRED: ESSENTIAL WORKS FOR THE SYMPHONIC BASS TROMBONIST

This new book, The One Hundred: Essential Works for the Symphonic Bass Trombonist is the most comprehensive book ever written on preparation of bass trombone audition and concert material. Published by Encore Music Publishers, it is 288 pages and contains 360 excerpts from 109 works by 49 composers, including 29 works that are under copyright for which we obtained legal licenses to reproduce in this book.

BOOK - MASTERING THE TROMBONE

The book, Mastering the Trombone was written by Edward Kleinhammer (Bass Trombonist, Chicago Symphony Orchestra 1940-1985) and me. In it, we discuss the important facets of trombone playing and include many exercises and musical examples to help players develop and hone their skills.

DVD - APPROACHING THE SERPENT: AN HISTORICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL OVERVIEW (NTSC or PAL format)

My most recent project is a DVD that features the serpent. In this video, I demonstrate over a dozen serpents and talk about their history and playing characteristics, give a serpent lesson, play duets with the viewer and discuss how to obtain a serpent, music and recordings. PDF files for all exercises, demonstration examples and duets are provided on the DVD. Both NTSC and PAL format DVDs are available.

CD - TABLE FOR THREE

This CD features music for brass trio with my Arizona State University friends and colleagues John Ericson (horn) and Deanna Swoboda (tuba) along with me playing bass trombone. Our trio has recorded a diverse program of music for horn, bass trombone and tuba including several world premieres of commissioned works. Of special interest to bass trombonists is Paul Ferguson's new composition, Table for Three at Chez Janau for horn, bass trombone and piano (AImee, Fincher, piano).

CD - LE MONDE DU SERPENT

My most ambitious recording project to date, Le Monde du Serpent features my playing serpent and contrabass serpent in repertoire spanning four centuries, assisted by members of the Baltimore Symhony Orchestra, the Gloriæ Dei Cantores choir, Berlioz Historical Brass, Deborah DeWolf Emery, piano and Jennifer Ashe, soprano. With a comprehensive 24 page booklet, this disc, details of which can be found here on my website, brings this most unusual of instruments to life in a new way.

CD - TWO OF A MIND

Two of a Mind is a recording project of solos and duets for tenor and bass trombone with British tenor trombonist Nick Hudson, accompanied by pianist David Chapman and the Williams Fairey Band, Thomas Wyss, conducting.

CD - CORNERSTONE

CORNERSTONE features performances of hymns and gospel songs accompanied by four pianists (Patricia Yeo, Stephen E. Gerber, Wes Ross and Beatrice Bush Bixler) along with readings by trombone and radio legend Bill Pearce.

CD - PROCLAMATION

My first solo recording, PROCLAMATION, accompanied by Britain's Black Dyke Mills Band, was released in 1996 to critical acclaim. In 2007 I took over production of the CD from Doyen Recordings and I updated the printed material but the audio content remains the same as the original issue. In addition to performances with the Band, trombonist Ronald Barron and pianist Patricia Yeo also are featured with me on the album.

CD - TAKE 1

My CD, Take 1, features me as soloist in live performances given in concert from 1975-1997. The repertoire includes the Rimsky-Korsakov Trombone Concerto, Alan Hovhannes' Symphony No. 34, Op. 310 for Bass Trombone and Strings, Norman Bolter's Of Mountains for Bass Trombone and Orchestra and several other works.
