Daniel Chester French (1850 - 1931) is well known as the sculptor who created the massive statue of Abraham Lincoln which sits in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. However, French created hundreds of other scuptures, many of which hold a great fascination for me. Part of my pluralistic life is to enjoy and be inspired by a variety of artist expressions among which gothic cathedral architecture in France (1150-1350) and French's sculpture figure prominently.
In an effort to bring French's work to a wider audience, I have embarked upon a project to visit and photograph French's scluptures in their current setting (in situ). These photos will be posted on this page as I have time to visit the monuments and get the images uploaded. I am not a professional photographer, and I take these images with my digital camera. But I think these images will give viewers an idea of the magnificence of French's artwork, and that viewers will also want to seek out the original works. For each sculpture, I have uploaded several images of a reasonable size for quick and easy web browser loading.
Follow the link below to Daniel Chester French's home and studio at Chesterwood in Stockbridge, Massachuetts, for a link to the Chesterwood official website that has a great deal more information about French, including a new resource: photos and commentary on the "barn gallery" at Chesterwood which contains models and information on many of French's work. Chesterwood offers a downloadable WORD document of major outdoor and selected indoor works of Daniel Chester French that is very helpful for those wishing to locate and view his work.
The Wikipedia article on Daniel Chester French also has useful biographical material and a list of some of his works. Author Dianne Durante has a website (and blog), ForgottenDelights.com that is a companion to her new book, Outdoor Monuments of Manhattan: A Historical Guide, which includes information about several works of French that are in New York City.
